Laurence McKeown is an academic, writer, playwright, poet, and filmmaker though he sees those roles within the broader context of political activism. In the late 1990s he co-wrote a feature film H3 based on the 1981 hunger strike which he participated in. Laurence then began to work as a playwright, using theater primarily to explore issues concerning the legacy of the conflict in the North of Ireland. His prison memoir Time Shadows was published in 2021 and a collection of poetry Threads published in 2018. He is also the co-editor of Nor Meekly Serve My Time (1994).
