Joseph Karl

Karl Joseph was born in Cayenne and lives and works in Guiana. In 2012, he co-founded the international biennial of the Rencontres Photographiques de Guyane, of which he is the artistic director. His photography, rooted in the reality of Guiana, explores long-term projects inspired by the quote from the poet Léon Gontran Damas: “… colonization, civilization, assimilation, and so on…” His images, between aesthetics and imbalance, invite a reflection on the complexity of the world. He is the author of several books, including La Guyane du Capitaine Anato (2019), Les Guyanais (2011) and Les Contes de Malastrana (2007).
