Karine Shan grew up in a Chinese family in Papeete, in Tahiti, where her father worked as a self-taught artist, poet, and painter. The death of her husband Christopher in 2015 sparked the need to express herself through writing and painting as a way to work through her grief. her art allows her to connect spiritually with her father, now deceased, and recount her identity as a Chinese-Polynesian woman and artist. she now lives in New Caledonia.
