# ARCHITECTURAL THEORIES /// A Subversive Approach to the Ideal Normatized Body

Body Measurements by Henry Dreyfuss Associates. MIT Press, 1974.

A year ago, I wrote an article which was exploring how the modernist theories had implemented the ideology of what I called an ideal normative body. In a nutshell, this oxymoron expresses the paradox of the elaboration of a body that was supposed to represent a standard for all bodies but, by doing so, became idealized as no real body was, in fact, perfectly matching this standard. The following article therefore constitutes a visual and textual opposition between this ideal normatized body as drawn by Ernst Neufert, Le Corbusier and the Architectural Graphic Standards and its subversion within architectural projects.

The modernist project to establish a standard for the human body is not born in the 20th century. Renaissance was built around this notion of idealized proportions both for the body and architecture. In 1487, Leonardo da Vinci drew what remains one of the most famous drawings of Western Art: the Vitruvian Man. Many re-interpretations and parodies of this drawing have been created to address the question of standard since then. That is the case (see below) of Thomas Carpentier, whose thesis project L’homme, mesures de toutes choses at the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture motivated the redaction of this article.

# STUDENTS /// Mechanical Living by Nelson Larroque

Mechanical Living is a project designed by Nelson Larroque within Peter Cook‘s studio at the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture in Paris (studio that I was lucky enough to be part four years ago). This project is a very literal vision of dwellings created in former industrial sites which facilities manage to supply energy.

# STUDENTS /// Utopia today : call for paper

Following is the call for paper for an up-coming events in the Salines Royale in Arc et Senans (designed by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux).

This call for paper has been sent to us by the two organisers of this event : Andri Gerber, Brent Patterson both teachers at Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris.

(version française à la suite du texte anglais)

Utopia today?

22/23/24 October 2010, Saline Royale (Royal Salt Works), Arc-et-Senans

After the utopian movements of the 1960s and 70s – Archigram, Architecture Principe, Utopie, Superstudio, Archizoom, the Metabolists, Yona Friedman, Paolo Soleri, Buckminster Fuller, Haus Rucker Co. or Coop Himmelb(l)au – utopian discourse and projects have disappeared from architecture and urban design. Utopia no longer appears to be a useful tool for architectural discourse or practice.

# STUDENTS /// Trans Europe Express by Martial Marquet

Here is Marksor‘s diploma project in the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture presented in june 2009.

I’d like to introduce this project which proposes to use Paris’ “intramuros” railway to increase density of the city. He takes advantage of this site for using digital manufacturing machines on trains to operate each structural element which can thus be as specific and non standard as desired…

# STUDENTS /// Data Bank Project by Claire Tournier & Martin Tubiana

# STUDENTS /// Dirty Duvet Factory by Lorène Faure & Cécile Ortolo
